Tumblr Staff: A New Policy Against Self-Harm Blogs
One of the great things about Tumblr is that people use it for just about every conceivable kind of expression. People being people, though, that means that Tumblr sometimes gets used for things that are just wrong. We are deeply committed to supporting and defending our users’ freedom of speech,…
In which Tumblr takes a tough stand against a dangerous issue, and does it the right way.
I don’t know. I’m, a bit mixed about this. I don’t like the whole self harm, pro-ana blog shit either, which is why I stay away from those type of blogs. But, you know. These people do have the right to post that content, especially since that content isn’t illegal.
I mean, what about thinspiration blogs? All they do is post scary thin girls, clearly glorifying eating disorders. But they don’t say how to get that thin, for the most part. Would that be against the rules? I feel like this new policy would be really hard to regulate. And when people legitimately report a blog over something like this, tumblr will just end up doing what they usually do. “Well, it’s not REALLY against the policy… we’ll leave it” Just like what they do with all the underage nudes running around on their website.
It’s a nice thought, I just don’t see how they’ll reinforce it, there is way too much grey area.
